Georgia Trial Lawyers Association Laurie Speed has re-appointed John Hadden as chair of the organization's Amicus Curiae Committee for 2018-2019, which he also chaired the prior year. GTLA's Amicus Curiae Committee frequently submits briefs to the Georgia Supreme Court, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in support of the Constitutional right to jury trial and other issues that affect those injured or harmed through the negligence of others. John has written and filed a number of amicus briefs, including:
- MCG Health, Inc. v. Owners Ins. Co., 288 Ga. 782, 707 S.E.2d 349 (2011), in which GTLA wrote in support of a military servicemember in a case where a hospital was attempting to obtain a portion of his personal injury settlement rather than accept payment from military insurance as full payment, and
- Camacho v. Nationwide Mut. Ins. Co., 692 F. App'x 985 (11th Cir. 2017), in which GTLA supported the family of a young mother killed by a drunk driver against the driver's insurance company in a bad-faith insurance action resulting in an ultimate recovery of over $8 million
As chair, John will be responsible for coordinating the Committee's activities, including communications with parties requesting amicus assistance, assigning writers for briefs and reviewing their work for submission, and writing briefs.
